Growing up in the heart of the Berkshire mountains surrounded by great trout rivers inspired my family tradition of fly fishing—a tradition that I was introduced to at a very early age. I remember spending days on the Deerfield fishing with my grandfather. I would watch with wonder at his precise casting techniques and anticipated the day when I could master this art as well as him. He fished with a bamboo fly rod which he crafted himself and upon which I received my first casting lessons. When my grandfather passed away, the rod was handed down to me—my first bamboo. To this day it remains one of my most prized possessions because of the memories built into it. Now, twenty five years later when I fish with this rod, I can envision my grandfather standing next to me and coaching me.
As a rod builder, each of my rods is made with the hope that it, too, will become someone’s prized rod. This will be the rod that you always go back to when you fish your favorite river knowing that this rod will do what you want it to do when you want it to. It will be a rod that will be passed down from generation to generation of trout fishermen being used as it was intended to--to catch fish and just maybe bring back memories of grandfathers, fathers and fishing days gone by.
